Atlanta – June 22, 2023 – Building industry nonprofit HomeAid Atlanta has completed its seventh Care Day of the year. HomeAid Care Days provide free-of-charge maintenance and repairs at facilities serving people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. On June 16, HomeAid volunteers from the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association Young Professionals Group, HB NEXT, and BOMA Georgia (Building Owners and Managers Association of Georgia) joined the Care Day at the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence. The Women’s Resource Center strives to meet the immediate and long-term needs of the diverse community of battered women and their children with programs that promote safety, compassion, connection, advocacy, and prevention.
Thirty hardworking volunteers spent the day completing much-needed tasks including spreading two truckloads of mulch, building two raised garden beds, and completing interior and exterior painting projects. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and donations of paint by Sherwin-Williams, the HomeAid Care Day provided a savings of nearly $8,500 for the Women’s Resource Center.
The funds saved can be used to provide programs and services to help women who seek refuge at the Women’s’ Resource Center, like Monica. “My kids’ father would never let me get my GED. It always bothered me that I didn’t have a diploma. He thought that if I got an education, I’d be smart enough to leave him. Well, I was,” she said. “When I came to the Women’s Resource Center, I signed up for a GED program right away. I had my graduation ceremony in July and now I’ve signed up for a Career Track Program. I feel so encouraged for the future. I believe in myself, thanks to help from the Women’s Resource Center.”
Barbara Gibson, Women’s Resource Center Housing Services Director, thanked the volunteers at the beginning of the day, “The fact that you are here shows these ladies that the community cares about them. Making this place warm and welcoming helps these ladies heal, find their worth, and choose a path forward for themselves and their children.”
The June 16 Care Day marked HomeAid Atlanta’s first time partnering with the Women’s Resource Center. Previous 2023 Care Days provided facility maintenance, repairs, and upgrades at Ascensa Health Women’s Recovery Residence, Calvary Refuge Center, The Drake House, Gateway Domestic Violence Center, and two Care Days at Gwinnett Housing Corporation. “Altogether HomeAid Atlanta’s 2023 Care Days have provided a savings of nearly $75,000 for metro Atlanta nonprofits serving families and individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and we are only halfway through the year,” remarked Mandy Crater, HomeAid Atlanta Executive Director. “This is likely to be our largest impact to date, both financially and in the lives our volunteers and our neighbors in need.”
